New Project: Design, Construction, Operation, and Maintenance of the Macau Artificial Island Sewage Treatment Plant

Foreword

A joint venture formed by China Gezhouba Group Co., Ltd., China Gezhouba Group Water Operation Co., Ltd., Ningbo Urban Drainage Co., Ltd., Ming Shun Construction and Property Investment Ltd. and China Gezhouba Group Company Limited Macau Branch has successfully won the bid for the project“Design, Construction, Operation, and Maintenance of the Macau Artificial Island Sewage Treatment Plant”，tendered by the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR). The contract period is 183 calendar months. 

Project Description

With the growing development needs of Macau, the Macau Special Administrative Region Government has decided to construct a new sewage treatment plant on the eastern side of the Zhuhai–Macau Artificial Island of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, in order to meet future requirements for sustainable urban development. The proposed sewage treatment plant will occupy an area of 72,600 square metres, with a total design capacity of 300,000 cubic metres of sewage per day and the production of 50,000 cubic metres of reclaimed water per day. The construction of the sewage treatment facilities will be carried out in phases, and the current awarded phase will be implemented based on a design capacity of 240,000 cubic metres of sewage per day.

The Artificial Island Sewage Treatment Plant will comprise four major facilities: sewage treatment, reclaimed water production, sludge treatment, and odour control. The inlet chamber and coarse screening facilities of the plant will be constructed within the existing Macau Peninsula Sewage Treatment Plant in Areia Preta. Sewage entering the inlet chamber will first pass through the coarse screening facilities, after which it will be conveyed to the Artificial Island Sewage Treatment Plant via two underground sewage pipelines (each with a diameter of 1.8 metres), constructed using the shield tunnelling method. The tunnel, with an internal diameter of approximately 5 metres and a total length of about 3.8 kilometres, will run through Zone A of the New Urban Area.The core treatment process of the Artificial Island Sewage Treatment Plant will adopt the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology, while also incorporating facilities for reclaimed water production within the same premises.
